Safety and Decorum

Some Safety Reminders:  Our highest priority if the safety of our players, coaches, umpires and spectators.  Thank you for your cooperation in following the posted safety rules at all of our facilities.

Here is a reminder of a few rules that are forgotten from time to time:

Bat Safety:

  • Please follow all the rules posted in each dugout.
  • Only player “at bat” is allowed outside the dugout; no “on deck” batter allowed
  • Players should only handle bats when it’s their turn to bat
  • Players should not swing bats without coach/adult supervision, including in bullpen areas during games

In addition, please do not throw or bat a hard ball (baseball) against any chain link fence.  This includes soft toss or tee work with a hard ball (soft balls, such as practice/foam/plastic balls or tennis balls, are OK as long as supervised by a coach or adult as part of practice station).

Finally, please watch young children carefully at all venues and please do not allow/encourage children to retrieve foul balls on 16th St.

Decorum at Game Sites:

Thank you for treating players, umpires, coaches, opponents, and visitors with respect.  Many visitors from South Boulder Little League have remarked that they are always impressed with the behavior of our NBLL patrons, coaches, and players.

Remember to thank your umpires, many of whom are young adults dedicated to continuously learning the skill of umpiring.  And, remember that adult umpires may be volunteering their time in service of our youth and our organization, so be sure to treat them with the respect and grace they deserve.

Remember that our fields, as well as many of those that we may visit, are located within a residential neighborhood.  Help NBLL maintain our positive standing with our neighbors by respecting private property, leaving the fields after dark, picking up all trash, and notifying neighbors of any inadvertent property damage (e.g. baseball breaks a windshield on a parked car).  Please ask permission from property owner, if possible, before retrieving balls from private property.

Lightning Safety
posted 5/3/2012 by NBLL
We would like to remind everyone while the weather is unstable during the spring months our first priority is to keep the kids safe.  If you hear thunder:

Stop the Game / Practice Immediately
Stay away from metal fencing (INCLUDING DUGOUTS)
Do not hold a metal bat.

If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact Cate at safetyofficer@nbll.com

Lightning Safety:
Each year in the United States, more than four hundred people are struck by lightning. On average, about 70 people are killed and many others suffer permanent neurological disabilities. Most of these tragedies can be avoided if proper precautions are taken. When thunderstorms threaten, coaches and sports officials must not let the desire to start or complete an athletic activity hinder their judgment when the safety of participants and spectators is in jeopardy.
In Boulder we experience a far worse than average lightning danger.
It is important for coaches and officials to know some basic facts about lightning and its dangers.
-All thunderstorms that produce lightning and are dangerous. In an average year, lightning kills more people in the US than either tornadoes or hurricanes. -The temperature of a lightning bolt is 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit
-Lightning often strikes outside the area of heavy rain and may strike as far as 10 miles from any rainfall. Many deaths from lightning occur ahead of storms because people wait too long before seeking shelter; or after storms because people return outside too soon.
-If you hear thunder, you are in danger. Anytime thunder is heard, the thunderstorm is close enough to pose an immediate lightning threat to your location.
-Lightning leaves many victims with permanent disabilities. While only a small percentage of lightning strike victims die, many survivors must learn to live with very serous, long-term disabilities.

NORTH BOULDER LL LIGHTNING POLICY
-Lightning detectors are situated at North Boulder Park, Iris Fields, Tom Watson and Centennial Baseball Fields and are to be used during games when weather is threatening.
-We do not rely solely on lightning detectors. Common sense is as important. If the lightning detector does not indicate imminent danger, adults, including the umpire, are free to evacuate or suspend play if their common sense dictates.
-Games will be delayed when the device registers in the 20 mile range, or if weather conditions indicate imminent danger. We will have a 20 minute game delay whenever the detector flashes in that range or there is less than 30 seconds between an observed lightning flash and thunder, whichever occurs first.
-Home Team Manager and Team Parent will be responsible for appointing a lightning monitor for each game, and making sure the detector is stored in the nearest storage box/shed after the game.

IF LIGHTNING DANGER IS DETECTED
-All players to safety immediately! The dugout is NOT SAFE! Substantial buildings provide the best protection. Once inside, stay off corded phones, and stay away from any wiring or plumbing. Avoid sheds, small or open shelters, dugouts, bleachers, or grandstands. If a sturdy building is not nearby, a hard-topped metal vehicle with the windows closed will offer good protection, but avoid touching any metal.
-At Iris Fields, Centennial and TWP seek shelter in vehicles. Use picnic shelter area at NBP or vehicles.
-Avoid open areas. Stay away from trees, towers, and utility poles. Lightning tends to strike the taller objects.
-Stay away from metal bleachers, backstops and fences. Lightning can travel long distances through metal.
Do not resume activities until 20 minutes after the last thunder was heard.

IF YOU FEEL YOUR HAIR STAND ON END(INDICATING LIGHTNING IS ABOUT TO STRIKE)
-Crouch down on the balls of your feet, put your hands over your ears, and bend your head down. Make yourself as small a target as possible and minimize your contact with the ground.
-Do not lie flat on the ground.

WHAT TO DO IF SOMEONE IS STRUCK BY LIGHTNING
-Lightning strike victims do not carry an electrical charge, are safe to handle, and need immediate medical attention.

-Call for help. Have someone call 911. Medical attention is needed
as quickly as possible.
Give first aid. Cardiac arrest is the immediate cause of death in lightning fatalities. However, some deaths can be prevented if the victim receives the proper first aid immediately. Check the victim to see that they are breathing and have a pulse and continue to monitor the victim until help arrives. Begin CPR if necessary.
-If possible, move the victim to a safer place. An active
thunderstorm is still dangerous. Don’t let the rescuers become
victims. Lightning CAN strike the same place twice.

The Snack Shack really still needs your help!!
by posted 04/25/2012

Please click here sign up for an hour shift or two. We've only had 4 (yes, four!) volunteers from the entire league sign up so far.

It's fun and easy, you can't make a mistake! It's just selling snacks and drinks and helping kiddo's decide what they can get for a buck or two.

Proceeds go directly to the league for field improvements, maintenance, gear, scholarships...

Thank you!

Please contact Amanda Louey with any questions/concerns.

Shifts are only 45 minutes during the week and 1 hour on Saturdays, and can be signed up for by clicking here.

Please contact Amanda Louey at   or
303-726-3097 with any questions.

The attached google doc is organized by days of the week, for April, beginning the first Saturday after Opening Day, on April 14.  Since games go all day at Iris on Saturdays, you'll see there are more shifts then compared to during the week.

Concussions & Youth Sports in Colorado: New Law & New Training
by posted 01/18/2012

In March, 2011, Governor John Hickenlooper signed into state law the "Jake Snakenberg Youth Sports Concussion Act".  This law, considered one of the most sweeping laws in the nation, is designed to help protect youth athletes from head injuries by requiring concussion awareness training for public and private school coaches, as well as volunteer coaches and manages in organizations like Little League.

The bill was named after Jake Snakenberg, a high school football player who died in 2004 after sustaining a hit during a game closely following an undiagnosed concussion from a hit in a previous game.

The bill requires that coaches receive education about concussions, that a student athlete is removed from the field of play if a concussion is suspected, and that the student be signed off by a healthcare professional before returning to play. The Act is effective as of January 1, 2012.

For information on Concussion in Youth Sports please visit http://www.cdc.gov/concussion/pdf/parents_Eng.pdf

All NBLL Managers and Coaches will be required by law to take the online concussion training course, found here.   http://www.cdc.gov/concussion/headsup/online_training.html

We hope that all parents and other league volunteers will also take the time to complete this training.

Registration 2012: Get Residency Documents Now!
by posted 11/16/2011

In 2011, Little League Baseball put in place new, narrower constraints on the dates that are acceptable for proof-of-residency documents required for league registration and participation in tournament play (all-stars).

The time window for valid residency documents for the 2012 season is Nov 1, 2011 – Feb 1, 2012.  So, now is the time to gather 3 proofs of residency if your child plans to play in NBLL next spring.  While NBLL may only keep 1 residency document on file, please collect 3 unique documents per Little League Baseball requirements.

As always, a valid copy of a child’s birth certificate will also be required. If you uploaded your child’s birth certificate during 2011 registration, you will not need to submit another birth certificate in 2012.

Click here for valid categories of residency documentation.  Note that the 3 residency documents must come from unique categories.
